The proposal story

Because it’s an FAQ, and because I just love the way he did it, here’s how Josh proposed. Forgive me in advance for any mushy undertones.

The weekend started early for me, as I got Friday off for Veterans Day. I went up to Lawrence a day earlier than usual, and I got to go to the KU Basketball game on Friday night. A student tradition at the games is to tear up newspaper into confetti to throw during the starting lineup and a few other times.

If you’ve ever been to a game with me, you know one of my favorite things to do is to find pieces of confetti that say funny or weird things out of context, and stick them on my friends. I found one on Friday that said “MARRY M” and put it on Josh. He just looked at me funny and stuck it in his wallet. I didn’t think too much of it.

Saturday, we decided to come down to Wichita to go to Horizons, a monthly electronic dance music event we used to go to all the time when he lived in Wichita, and was having its first event in over 8 months, making it a good time to come down. We decided to have dinner at one of our favorite sushi places, Hana Cafe, in Old Town Square, a place we frequented almost every weekend the first year we were dating. After dinner, we went across the square to say hi to a couple of friends at Oeno, a wine bar/club place thing.

We left there and were walking back across the square to the parking garage, when Josh stopped, looked around, and started talking about how much he missed us being able to do this all the time together, and how he was ready for things to change. I told him that they could change if we wanted them to, and he said something about how he wanted it to be just right, a big deal. I imagine he meant like the surprise trip to Vegas back in April. I told him I would be happy no matter how it happened, and I didn’t need any big production.

Then he pulled out the box from a local jeweler in Lawrence. Inside was the piece of confetti I had given him the night before.

I laughed a little, and looked up, a little bit confused. He said, “I’m sorry I can’t give you a ring…because I’m not down on one knee.” Of course, then he got down on one knee, right there in the middle of Old Town Square, and told m a lot of things, and then pulled out this box and asked me to marry him.

I took the ring out of the box, which LIGHTS UP, and put it on, squeeing and “oh my God”-ing. He looked at me and asked if I had an answer to his question. I said yes, yes yes yes!

Right after he proposed.

Then I had to post to facebook (and make the obligatory relationship status change), twitter and tumblr. My phone camera chose that exact time to stop working, so I had to wait until we got to Horizons and Coty let me use his phone to post the first official pic of the ring.

I love this ring btw, it is exactly what I didn’t know I wanted. Josh and I had discussed styles and settings and whatnot, and I sent him various pics as suggestions, but this was above and beyond. It’s perfect.

(why do ring photos make fingers look so sausage-y? Come on!)

The whole thing was as perfect as two imperfect people could make it.
