Notes &
In Case You Didn’t Know….
I am a nerd. I’m pretty sure that I’m a nerd, and not a geek or a dork. Or maybe mostly nerd and a little bit dork, but definitely not a geek. I’m also fairly outgoing while also an introvert (at least according to the Meyers-Briggs people…I’m an INFP). I thrive on social situations, and I love meeting new people and having new experiences…all the time. At the same time, I love being alone, reading, sci-fi, history, science, and other things that might well make me a nerd.
Here’s what I’ve got so far:
- I love Star Trek. This is a huge indicator of my nerdliness. I’m mostly a fan of ST:TNG and ST:DS9, didn’t care much for ST:VOY, won’t acknowledge Enterprise, and pay homage to ST:TOS…of course. The new Star Trek film should be pretty interesting, even if the rumors are true, and J.J. Abrams is making some changes. I watch these shows whenever they’re on TV, which isn’t too often these days.
- I am a blogger. This can be intermittent blogging on the Xanga, or observational blogging here, or other failed blogging attempts. I also enjoy reading other blogs, including celebrity blogs, political ones (sometimes), and blogs about shows, like Have You Met Ted (a How I Met Your Mother blog).
- I read books that aren’t chick lit. Mind, I also read chick lit from time to time, but I enjoy sci-fi novels and historical fiction best. Also non-fiction.
- I read the Economist (concurrently with Cosmo from time to time, as noted below…this detracts from my nerdiness).
- I love movies. Particularly older films. This isn’t nerdy per se, but I really enjoy talking about them in great detail, and when i get a chance to do so, it’s hard to shut me up :-)
- I have seen all 6 Star Wars movies and all 10 (soon to be 11) Star Trek movies. I also likes me some Lord of the Rings trilogy, and have been known to enjoy a Karate Kid movie from time to time.
- I actually liked speaking in class (during undergrad…in law school, you speak when spoken to). Often, it was the teacher and myself having a discussion about whatever book or article was topical at the moment. Mostly I didn’t mind this, but sometimes it was awkward.
- Speaking of awkward, I was. In middle school and some of high school, I was a little oversensitive and really had trouble adjusting to a totally new scene of people and money and clothes and….bleh. I grew out of it in later high school and especially in college, but once a nerd, always a nerd. (Note: I believe that middle school should be outlawed. Human children between ages 11-14 are not suitable for contact with one another or with the world.)
- I am really easily amused. Really. I will laugh at a certain Taco Bell commercial (which I have never found on youtube) every time I see it. Really bad jokes are funny to me (I’m not laughing with you), and I enjoy puns. I know, shameful. It doesn’t take much to make me laugh, but the things I find funny, well…there’s no accounting for taste.
- Inside jokes are great. As long as I’m on the inside. What?
That’s all I have for now. Somehow when I write it, only a few things come out as truly nerdy, but if you know me, you know how I be! I guess the point of this is to show that nerdliness is no longer a precursor to social outcast-ness, and that nerd is the new awesome. Oh yeah.
