I’ve been reading/following the disability.gov blog’s Countdown to the 20th Anniversary of the ADA for a while now. It was a major step in the civil rights movement, and one of my personal interests. I’ve shared some posts on reader, and it’s definitely worth checking out. The book signing story in this one really got to me today :-)

I use my phone more than my computer lately

I just got the HTC Evo a few weeks ago. Since then, I have used it to check email, twitter, text, talk, etc. All the usual stuff.

What’s not usual is that I use it to check Google reader ALL the time now. I use it to read websites I never would have with my old Blackberry Curve, because I couldn’t read them on the “tiny” screen.

I use it so much for this now, that my nearly new, beautiful, pink Sony Vaio just sits, unused, practically gathering dust these days. I feel kind of bad about that. The computer is ridiculously powerful and can do much more than my phone can do in most ways, but I can’t carry it around with me in purse all day, and I can’t just take it out when I’m bored and want to check on the social mediaz.

I use the computer at work all day, so that when I get home, I don’t want to go online (on my beautiful computer) as much. This was true before I got the Evo. But I would still have to go on at home every once in a while to keep up with my RSS feeds and the like. I can check that stuff occasionally at work, but since I sometimes do real, actual work there, I can’t keep up all the time. Or at least, I couldn’t.

I love my phone. But I can’t help but feel guilty about letting my computer sit at home, unused most of the time.

“The feature film “Conviction” is set to be released in October, and a new trailer is already stirring up excitement. Hilary Swank leads an all-star cast as she portrays Betty Anne Waters in her quest to clear her brother, Kenny, was convicted of a murder he didn’t commit and exonerated with the help of the Innocence Project.”

I wonder if this film will lose its appeal (ha, no pun intended) because I already know how it ends? Probably not.

New USDOT/ADA Transportation Laws:

“The Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced the first federal rule to specifically provide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protections to people with disabilities who travel on boats and ships. The rule applies to two categories of vessels - vessels operated by public entities, such as public ferry systems, and vessels operated by private entities that are mainly in the business of transporting people, such as cruise ships. Under the rule vessel operators cannot charge extra for accessibility-related services to passengers, cannot require passengers to furnish their own attendants, and cannot deny access to passengers based on disability”

The fact that these rules had to be put in place at all is upsetting, but I’m glad they’re there. Penalizing people with disabilities is not the way forward.

Oh man. I can remember when you could call KU Info for pizza delivery numbers, or even random questions like how many trees are on campus, or how many kangaroos are in Australia. Really. I knew a lot of the staff of KU info from 2001-2003, they knew everything. The office was covered in newspaper clippings and filled with crates full of files. But most of the information was in their heads. It was awesome.

The format of KU info changed about halfway through my time at KU, and became more of a campus resource only (bo-ring), but the legacy lives on, apparently.

Last week my phone stopped accepting a charge while plugged in. The mini USB port on my Blackberry Curve is pretty much destroyed, so I can’t charge the battery through that. I didn’t get any help on that from the Sprint store yesterday, which…well, whatever, I am looking to upgrade to the HTC EVO 4G next week when my upgrade date happens. Until then, I’m out of the “real time” loop of twitter, tumblr, and facebook (whazzat?) updates. Oh well, I’ll take this as an unplanned tech vacation. Sort of. I still have tweetdeck and the interwebs.

Yesterday night, I discovered that the radiator on my car was overheating. Today at lunch, steam was rolling off the hood of my car. Awesome. Josh helped me fill the thing with water to keep the system a little cooler, and I took the car in to have it looked at. They have to replace the whole radiator, which blows (is that a pun?) and it ain’t cheap. The car is just getting old. It’s run so well for so long, just some of the parts are getting older. It’s starting to get costly to maintain it. I love it though, so I hope nothing else goes wrong with it any time soon.

I suppose it’s just not my week for stuff I need to work right. I did get an unexpected afternoon off “work” (volunteering is WORK. You just don’t get paid), but I emailed and made phone calls from home, so I still got a lot done.

I don’t post a whole lot of original content on here anymore. Maybe I’ll change that. Maybe not.
